Many people feel some discomfort or experience minor anxieties when pushed into a new situation or a large group of unfamiliar people. Unfortunately, for about ten percent of the population, anxiety about social situations is bad enough to be disabling. Scientists now estimate that an even larger number of people probably deal with more mild forms of social anxieties that can result in significant issues in daily social situations.

The technical term for this kind of anxiety is "social phobia". Social Phobia most often happens when someone has fears and worries that usually arise from being in a social event. One who struggles with a social phobia might also have trouble with making themselves stop thinking too much about how others are judging or evaluating them.

For those who suffer from social phobia, feelings of anxiety can happen in many different kinds of situations, such as going shopping, going to a party, speaking in public, being in front of an audience, or being interviewed. These types of social anxieties can also manifest physically; for many people with social phobia, sweating, flushing, shaking, or intestinal issues can happen when coming face to face with these kinds of stress provoking situations.

Scientists now argue that social phobia is defined by issues with self-confidence. Self confidence is the ability to feel that we are able to make good decisions, be independent, and take power over our lives. People who lack self-confidence -- a very common problem in today's modern world -- might think too much about how they are perceived, to the point of not wanting to participate in social activities or of having a sense of feeling "out of control".

If you want to deal with self-confidence issues, you have to be in control of your own recovery.
