Fraxel™ laser produces thousands of microscopic, deep columns in the skin called microthermal zones. The old damaged cells are replaced by healthy new cells. Unlike traditional laser resurfacing where the epidermis is destroyed and there is at least 2 weeks’ healing time, with Fraxel™ treatments, the epidermis remains intact, so there is very little healing time required.

Fraxel™ laser smoothes fine lines and wrinkles on the face, reduces sun damage, improves texture and tone of the skin, and fades age spots, sun spots and pigmentation. It also improves acne scarring, reduces pore size, and minimizes stretch marks. Areas that can be treated include the face, neck, chest, back, forearms, hands, abdomen, and thighs. Fraxel™ laser treatments result in fresh, smooth, healthy skin. All skin types benefit from treatment.

A topical anesthetic cream is applied and a cooling device is used to minimize discomfort. Several passes are done over the treatment area. Depending on the number of areas treated, the procedure takes 20 to 45 minutes. If there is a history of cold sores (herpes simplex), an oral antiviral medication is started one day prior to treatment and continued for another 3 days. Sun protection after the treatment is important in order to avoid pigmentation. Typically, 5 treatments are necessary, about 4 weeks apart. Improvement is noticed within 1 to 3 months.

After treatment, the skin tends to be red and puffy for a few days. A bronzed appearance can then occur after a few days, followed by a mild peel. Make-up can be applied immediately after the treatment and men can continue to shave. Most patients return to their routine activities by the next day. Sun protection is important after the treatment and in between treatments.
