The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) reports that in the United States alone, over 18% of all adults have anxiety problems. That means over 40 million Americans suffer from anxiety. Another alarming statistic the ADAA has found is 1/3 of the money that goes to healthcare in the US is spent on disorders dealing with anxiety.

Anxiety is a problem that is crippling Americans. The cause might be the fast-paced society we live in, or the feeling of incompleteness that more of us are experiencing everyday. Whatever the case, if you're dealing with anxiety, you just wish to have control over it, instead of being controlled by it.

Anxiety can be caused by a number of different things, and its symptoms are varied, but all people who suffer from anxiety do so because they think negative thoughts which cause fear. The fear may be of the unknown, or of failing, but the fear acts to cripple us, and make us feel depressed or overwhelmed, things that we shouldn't have to feel.

Enter Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive-behavioral therapy has helped many people overcome their anxiety. The way it works is it changes how we act, feel and think about things from a negative perspective to a positive one.

How to Change Your Thoughts

Most people spend time worrying and become anxious over things they have no control over. These create negative thoughts, which need to be controlled and stopped if we are going to overcome anxiety. First, you need to be able to recognize your negative thoughts, if you're going to stop them. If you have no power over it, then there is no reason for you to worry about it, and if you have power over it then there's no reason why you shouldn't think positively about it.

Changing Actions

Changing how you act is the next step with CBT.

If you're going to overcome your anxiety, you have to start changing things like shying away from situations and people, to confronting those situations. With the aid of the first step, being able to think positively about the situations, it will help you utilize the second step. This is a very hard step, but each attempt makes it easier for you to overcome your fears.

Changing Feelings

Changing the way you feel is the final step in CBT.

By finding a way to think positively about the thoughts you can control, and to take action on those thoughts, it will be much easier for you to change your feelings about confronting unknown situations, and meeting new people, and ultimately starting to feel better.

With that said, you still need ways to take away the stress. Whether your stress is worse in the morning, at night, or at both times, you need to have a plan to destress. Actually, you may decide to want to destress several times over the course of the day. Find what works best for you, and then commit to it.

What is the best way to destress? Visualization techniques work good for some people. For others, they utilize relaxation techniques. Experiment with different ways to take stress of your life.

Anxiety is something that is not very easy to overcome. Yet, there are many things you can do to reduce your feelings of anxiety. Use the three steps in CBT as a start. While it's easier to read each step the van to actually do it, by making a commitment to work at it, the less anxiety will control your life.
