Providing love and security to a child without parents is extremely fulfilling not only for the child, but for the adult as well. If adoption is something that you are considering, you need to fully understand all of the legal and emotional implications. Adopting a child can be a lengthy and complicated process, but the benefits for both of you will be priceless.

Adoption is the legal process of welcoming a child into your family. Upon completion of the adoption process, the new parents are given the same rights and assume the same responsibilities of biological parents. Adoptive parents are granted legal custody of the child and become wholly responsible for his or her social, physical and emotional well-being.

Child adoption is legally recognized around the world. Many countries allow legal adoption as a means to provide permanent care and security for orphaned or abandoned children. This universal aim has changed the face of adoption over the past decades. In years' past, babies were primarily considered for adoption; but today, the concept of adopting a child has flourished to include children of all ages. There are several reasons that all children are now readily adopted, regardless of age.

The most obvious reason for adoption is the simple fact that, as a human being, every child has the right to safety, health, security and happiness. Children must be able to plant roots and feel loved and accepted as important family members. Everyone needs to feel that there is a family waiting for us, wanting to share their lives and care for us. Children feel this need and have this very basic right.

The basis of every child's self worth is to love and be loved. Without those feelings, a child is not able to determine his or her place in society or their relevance to others. They are not able to integrate easily into their communities. Without parental attention and appreciation, children may face social and behavioral struggles.

Many single adults and couples wishing to raise families do so because they are unable to conceive children. To these caring individuals, adoption is a way to fill the void and complete their families. They know that children will enrich their lives, and they realize all that they can offer to a child in need.

Sometimes, adoptive parents may already have biological children, and wish to enrich their families by adopting a child. Some thirty percent of adoptive parents do, in fact, have biological children of their own. The numbers of loving and caring single adoptive parents are also growing.

Children can be without parents for many reasons. War and famine create tragic situations that leave countless children as orphans. Others are placed for adoption by parents who realize that they are not able to provide the degree of care the child needs and deserves. While some view this as a selfish, cowardly act, parents who place their children for adoption are often torn by their decision. Whatever the reason, adoptive children need to enjoy the love of kind, caring parents.

Young parents often realize that they can't provide the necessary support, and so choose to place their children for adoption. Financial difficulties often play a role in this decision. Single parents may believe that they simply can't support the child, provide an education or otherwise help to mold the child into a responsible, capable individual.

While the rates of legal adoption have reached an all-time high throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, and North America, there are many more children waiting and hoping for adoptive parents who are willing to open their hearts to provide the care and security they desperately need.
